چکیده

INTRODUCTION Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia in adults. Atrial fibrillation occurs as paroxysms or may become established as permanent condition. Patients with atrial fibrillation are at increased risk for thromboembolic disease. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To study effectiveness of Warfarin in reducing Stroke incidence in patients of Atrial Fibrillation. MATERIAL AND METHODS This hospital based case study was performed on 50 patients in Dr DY Patil Medical College and Research Centre from October 2009 to September 2011. RESULTS Out of 50, 10 patients developed stroke which were not on Warfarin and 32 patients didn't develop stroke who were on warfarin. CONCLUSION Warfarin significantly reduces incidence of stroke in AF patients.

Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation in Combination with Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion in A Single Procedure. Rationale and Technique.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, and is associated with a fivefold increase in the risk of ischemic stroke and systemic embolism. Left atrial appendage (LAA) is the source of thrombi in up to 90% of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Although thromboembolic prophylaxis by means of oral anticoagulants (OAC) has been shown to be very effec...

Investigation of the relationship between pharmacological knowledge of anticoagulants with medication adherence in the elderly patients with atrial fibrillation

Introduction and Aim: In the elderly, the rate of adherence to the medication regimen and the rate of remembering how to correctly prescribe medication is low due to old age and memory loss, which leads to poor therapeutic results. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between anticoagulants knowledge and adherence to treatment in elderly cardiac patients with atrial fibrillat...

NOACs; Friend or Foe?

New oral anticoagulants (NOAC’s) are becoming more popular as antithrombotic agents for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in atrial fibrillation and as prophylaxis in hip and knee surgery. With simple administration, rapid onset, few drug interactions and the absence of coagulation monitoring, NOAC’s appear as a friend in the prevention of thromboembolic events. Undoubtedly patients woul...

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure devices: safety, efficacy, and clinical utility

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia treated in the clinical practice. One of the major complications of AF is a thromboembolic cerebral ischemic event. Up to 20% of all strokes are caused by AF. Thromboembolic cerebral ischemic event in patients with AF occurs due to atrial thrombi, mainly from the left atrial appendage (LAA). Prevention of clot formation with antiplatelet ag...

Stroke Risk Predictor Scoring Systems in Atrial Fibrillation.

An effective risk stratification which could help us identify high-risk patients who should take oral anticoagulants (OACs) is the key step for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (SPAF). Several scoring systems were available to estimate the risk of stroke in AF, including CHADS2, CHA2DS2-VASc, R2CHADS2 and ATRIA scores, which were constituted of different clinical risk factors. Recently,...
